NOTICE OF ANNUAL "PEGASUS 2011" SCALE MODEL EXPO
26 & 27 NOVEMBER 2011 AT THESSALONIKI, GREECE

The Pegasus Scale Modeling Association of Northern Greece, organizes the "PEGASUS 2011" annual exhibition & competition on 26 & 27 November 2011 (Saturday & Sunday). The "PEGASUS 2011" will take place at the Architectural Department of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, located at Angelaki 13 street, Thessaloniki. The Board and the members of the Association would like to invite colleagues and friends scale modelers to visit our city and participate in the "PEGASUS 2011" annual exhibition & competition and enjoy our hobby together.

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION & RULES

( 1 ) The "PEGASUS 2011" annual exhibition & competition is open for any kind of scale models, scale figures, dioramas etc, built in any scale. The scale models, should be mounted on display bases that will not exceed the 60x40cm dimensions. Scale models or dioramas that exceed the 60x40cm dimensions, will be accepted only if the Board and the organizing committee agrees that the quality and nature of the exhibit, contribute to the upgrading of the scale modelling hobby.

( 2 ) The "PEGASUS 2011" Board and the organizing committee reserves the right not to accept scale models at the sole discretion of the design contest in any manner or meet quality standards in the organization. Models of weapons, rifles, pistols etc or any convincing imitations in 1/1 scale will not be accepted.

( 3 ) All scale models, should be mounted on display bases - otherwise will not be accepted. The safe mounting of each scale models on its base is the sole responsibility of each participating scale modeler and the Association bears no responsibility for damages caused to scale model because falling from its display base.

( 4 ) The registration fee, is set at 2 EUR for each scale model. Young scale modelers who are under 18 years old, participating into "JUNIOR" class, will participate for free.

( 5 ) The "PEGASUS 2011" Board and the organizing committee, will receive and register each scale model, on Saturday 26 November 2011 from 10:00 to 14:00 hours and will return them back to their owners on Sunday 27 November 2011 after the ceremony at 18:00 and not before. Exceptional cases & participants coming from afar, should be in contact with the Board and the organising committee, to be served as best as possible.

( 6 ) The competing scale models will be classified into one of the following classes:

  • Class "JUNIOR" for young scale modelers, who are under 18 years old,
  • Class "ADULTS / STANDARD" for adult scale modelers and
  • Class "EXPERIENCED / MASTER" for experienced scale modelers.

The integration of each scale model in "ADULTS / STANDARD" or "EXPERIENCED / MASTER" class will be declared by the participating scale modeler. Keep in mind that the "EXPERIENCED / MASTER" class is under more stringent award criteria.

During the past years, we've witnessed a tendency to appear as compete as a "STANDARD" class the scale models that were built "OOB - Out Of the Box" without the use of any add-ons and the "MASTER" class scale models have contained improvements. Unfortunately, it seems that this exact distinction is based on the aforementioned logic, which is now obsolete and does not correspond with the reality of the now-days scale modeling. Especially terms like "OOB - Out Of the Box", makes no sense, because the "OOB" today, was the "resin & photoetched improved" a few years ago. What is important and should be judged in a competition is the ability of the scale modeler to produce realistic results, not the materials used or purchased. For this reason, the new trend is the separation between the "STANDARD" and "MASTER" classes, to the artistic skill of the scale modeler and not the material that the scale model is made of. The "PEGASUS 2011" Board and the organizing committee, hoping that most will have the sensitivity and maturity to compete into the right class. The Board and the organizing committee will try to admonish a courteous and discreet manner possible exceptions of any possible prize-hunters when or if identified. Those who "escape" ... will be judged by History!

Jury committee members are forbidden to compete.

( 7 ) The scale model participation categories are:

  • Category 1a - Figures "EXPERIENCED / MASTER",
  • Category 1b - Figures "ADULTS / STANDARD",
  • Category 2 - Military dioramas,
  • Category 3a - Military vehicles "EXPERIENCED / MASTER",
  • Category 3b - Military vehicles "ADULTS / STANDARD",
  • Category 4a - Aircraft & helicopters "EXPERIENCED / MASTER",
  • Category 4b - Aircraft & helicopters' "ADULTS / STANDARD",
  • Category 5 – Boats & marine themes,
  • Category 6 – Civilian themes
  • Category 7 - Fantasy & Sci-fi,
  • Category 8 – "JUNIOR", any theme.

( 8 ) Following a decision of the "PEGASUS 2011" jury committee, the following prizes will be awarded to the competing scale models:

  • Gold medals,
  • Silver medals,
  • Bronze medals and
  • Commendations.

Moreover, wishing to honor the Memory of two great scale modelling masters, the following special prizes will be awarded:

  • "NIKOLAOS ORFANOUDAKIS" award for the best scratchbuilt scale model and
  • "JACOB BENVENISTE" award for the best scale figure.

Additionally,

  • "BEST GREEK MODEL" prize will be awarded to the best Greek related scale model and finally
  • "BEST OF SHOW" prize goes to the best of the best scale models into the entire "PEGASUS 2011" expo.

The scale model judgment and the prize awarding will be held under the "OPEN" system which is relatively competitive, but objectively, and scale models do not compete each other to distinguish only the first, second, etc. Nevertheless the "OPEN" system, does not guarantee more awards since depending on the stringency of the criteria or their application by the jury committee and always in relation to the qualitative effect of the scale models and may be fewer or and no discrimination in one or more categories. It is known that the "OPEN" system, does not limit the number of medals. For example, if there are many good scale models in a class can be given more than one gold medals, of course does not mean that the award is a must. That means that a class can only be awarded with silver and bronze medals or just copper medals.

( 9 ) To avoid overcrowding during manual registering the scale models by the organizing committee, the online subscription and registration is also available into Pegasus Scale Modeling Association of Northern Greece www.pegasusmodelclub.com official website. Following that way, the scale modelers will avoid the delaying manual registration process and will be served fast only recalling their full name data as given into the electronic registration form. Successful online registrations will be informed by sending confirming email messages.

"PEGASUS 2011" EXHIBITION DEBRIEFING

Once again, scale modelers and enthusiasts of the creative hobby that unites us, traveled and met each other, discussed and gave their best in the "Pegasus 2011" exhibition. The entries were many - more than initially estimated, by the Pegasus Club organizing committee. Modelers from Ioannina, Kavala, Komotini, Patras, Euboea, Athens, Crete and out good friends from Bulgaria, gathered under a warm and welcoming atmosphere to enjoy a celebration of the hobby. It was an honor for "Pegasus Club" to host scale modelers with enthusiasm, experience and technical training in the subject and above all appetite for what they do. All Greek scale modeling clubs were invited. Some of them participated either by their physical presence scale models, or with representatives, others notified that they could not attend for reasons that are fully understood and respected. The final conclusion is one: Those who could and did not finally participated in this year's "Pegasus 2011", missed the opportunity to experience a celebration of the scale modeling. We hope they might think again next year.

CONCLUSIONS AS TO THE STATISTICS

Studying the "Pegasus 2011" exhibition statistics and checking the photos of the scale models, someone can easily see that this year the scale figures were much more than previous years, the naval subjects were too few and the aviation related scale models were significantly less, compared with previous years' events. Many exhibits were of the highest quality, which fills us with joy and optimism about the present and the future of the scale modeling.

CONCLUSIONS AS TO THE PRE-REGISTRATION

Electronic subscriptions escaped the organizing committee of several typing hours and helped drastically reduce the effort required and the waiting time in the Registry. Any - albeit small - delay was due to the fact that many had not done online subscription of their scale models.

CONCLUSIONS AS TO THE SECURITY

The fact that more scale modelers have trusted their builds this year to the organizing committee, means that the Pegasus Club has reached a pretty good level in terms of management and security of the exhibits. Members of the organizing committee took care to politely inform visitors, not to approach close to the scale models and be careful not to drag any of the scale models with the camera straps, the sleeves of jackets and shoulder bags. Nonetheless, one visitor might intentionally, perhaps provocatively, translated courtesy of organizing committee members who were entrusted with the safety of scale models, as a failure to enforce regulations, he continuously did not comply with the suggestions and insisted touch models, forcing the organizing committee members and the Board to respond and expel him by dynamic force. This unique event, finally ended happily and smoothly without any material damage to the exhibits, was such a lesson that taught us to take stringent measures in the future and impose the legitimate where and when needed.

CONCLUSIONS AS TO THE RULES

Although the "Pegasus 2011" exhibition and the conditions for participation stated in clear and understandable way that the scale models should be securely placed on display bases, some scale models were registered without meeting the above condition. Nevertheless, even at the last moment, some display bases were found and preferred to place the scale models on to be easily manageable and movable by the judges and the organizing committee.

Special mention for all our friends scale modelers from Bulgaria and the Scalemodels-BG forum who traveled so many kilometers to be with us again.
